One of the best ways to fall in love with a place is to serve alongside other folks or engage with awesome communities . Here are are just a couple organizations/communities/causes that make Oakland so great:

O.C.O. is a collaboration of various community groups working together to take action on various issues in the city

Regina's Door- More than just a storefront boutique, Regina empowers a community of activits and artists working to end and prevent human trafficking here in Oakland.  She's also a friend of Oak Life!

Burma Family Refugee Network- Non-prof working to provide community and support for Burmese Refugees.  

The Oakland Mind: builds community through art.

Project Peace East Bay: Brings together communities to work for the good of the East Bay.

Oakland Leadership Center: provides leadership skills for young people

Trybe: A Non Profit working with young people on the East Side of Lake Merritt.

Institute of Urban Homesteading: A great org that works to help folks become more DIY with urban farming, food creating, etc.  

We could go on- Oakland has one of the most incredibly socially engaged cultures of any city in the country.  Just do some google searches on Oakland's community and you'll be blown away.



Portal - Stylish & innovative eatery with varied menu of bites, patio seating & bottomless mimosa specials. They also do dinner and Lunch.

Chop Bar - Rustic-chic gastropub offering all-day American comfort fare & cocktails, plus beer & wine on tap.

Star - Newish deep dish pizza place on Grand.  Good stuff.
Encuentro for the best vegan eats (and to change your non-vegan friends' opinions of it)

Homeroom - Imagine the best Mac n' Cheese you ever had, then times it by 10, divide it by 3, and multiply it by 100. GF and V options.  

Friday Nights Off the Grid  by the Museum of CA- tons of good food trucks, music, dancing.



The New Parkway Theater - Oakland's beloved picture pizza pub for movies, food & drink.  Also TNP is our host on Sunday mornings- so show them some love!

Betty Ono Gallery - A locally owned art space that helps nurture and cultivate creativity in Oakland.


Great picnic spots: 
Lake Merritt- literally anywhere along the shores.  When the weather is nice, Lake Merritt becomes a hub of beautiful humanity in all it's glory.

Chabot Observatory- up in the hills Oakland has it's very own window into the cosmos with great views of the whole bay!

Rooz Cafe - Great community cafe that cares about the city a lot.  
Room 389 for coffee in the morning and drinks in the evening.
World Ground Cafe- another great neighborhood cafe/coffee shop


The Trappist/Provisions - great selection of good barely pops.
Telegraph Beer Garden - Bustling, dog-friendly beer garden hangout with a variety of grilled eats & a relaxed outdoor patio.
Lost and Found - Casual, spacious indoor/outdoor spot serving craft beers & updated bar food with global influences.
